Sydney Opera House 1970s Retro
This artwork is an expression of nostalgia and change. Construction of the Sydney Opera House was completed in three building stages from 1959 and was opened by the Queen on October 20, 1973.
The 1970s was the decade colour replaced black and white television in Australia. I feature colour in the sky and fashions sailing by the window to reflect upon the dramatic changes in Sydney’s culture after 1970. The use of grey tones contrasts with colour and represents a nostalgia for the aspirations of the people who started the Opera House in the 1950s.
The curved edge of the plated glass windows provided interesting light reflection and a spaceship appearance to the Opera House. It had me thinking of time spent watching “Lost In Space” in the 1970s on B&W and then Colour TV. Construction of the Sydney Opera House was completed in three building stages from 1959 to 1973. And opened by the Queen with locals watching in shop windows displaying colour TVs.
