Touchdown is a moment in time captured by my first SLR camera; at about the time this photo was taken the movie Karate Kid was released in 1984.
When I approached this project to paint my mind wandered back to the scene in the move with Daniel balancing on the bow of a row boat. There was some great photography in this movie, I remember the golden water and sun setting on the lake while watching Daniel’s silhouette move to find balance with the boat.  His coach Miyagi wanted the young apprentice to “better learn balance. Balance is key. Balance good, karate good. Everything good. Balance bad, better pack up, go home. Understand?”
The Reveal - Photo to Painting
With Touchdown I was drawn to the green and blue paintwork of the row boat and chopstick oars pointing to the soft hazy sky. I felt lucky to capture this image as this was taken in the days of manual focus lenses. Using a smaller f-stop, I had blurred the background to place important emphasises on the seagull at the moment of touching down.
In this artwork I have enjoyed painting the detail of the bird and the boat. The artwork is on stretched canvas and I have crafted a wooden cradle around the canvas and painted it a similar colour to the hull of the boat. This painting was designed to bring a sense of balance to a room with touches of pink and grey being balanced against blues and greens.
To promote the painting I took it to a location in keeping with the theme and colours of the subject. Then selected one photo for adding to the image gallery and corrected colour balance using Lightroom classic.
Then all elements of the project were drawn together in a short promo video using Adobe SP.
